Cakes or rounds made of steamed rice and black lentils is a common breakfast in South Asia, especially in Southern India; while nutritious and filling, these little discs aren’t exactly known for their flavor or their appearance. This recipe tackles both issues with a one-two punch of taste and fun!

With this recipe, the rice cakes are formed into adorable little animals, and then served with a gravy made up of amazing vegetables, including eggplant, potatoes, and onion. Seasoned with curry leaves, turmeric, and a few other classic Indian flavorings, this gravy takes the rather bland rice cakes up a notch, making for a fantastic and delicious breakfast. We’d suggest serving a side of fresh fruit with this one, both to mellow out the palate and round out the nutrients on your plate. Enjoy!
